Why Love and Logic ®

Several months ago, I was having an argument with my 2-year old daughter, one of many in the previous couple of weeks. I was so angry I thought I would burst. I wanted to scream and cry, and I did – at my daughter. I felt like I was missing some vital piece of information about 2-year olds. I mean, everyone knows about the “terrible twos” and I thought I knew what I was in for when she began throwing tantrums, refusing to do what I asked, screaming at the drop of a hat. What I didn’t expect was my strong, angry, helpless reactions and my utter ineffectiveness at handling her behavior.

I recalled a few months earlier when a friend of mine had visited and told me about Love and Logic®, after her comment, “Jeez, you just let her get away with everything, don’t you?” About which I was quite offended – it most certainly was not true (it really wasn’t!). But as the weeks and months passed, I noticed that I was parenting to avoid a tantrum.

So anyway, that particular night when she and I were having the 7th screaming argument that week, I realized that maybe that Love and Logic® stuff could provide the information about raising a two year old that I so desperately needed. I went to the library and checked out two audio CDs – one was about parenting from birth to age 6, and the other was an interview with Charles Fay and Foster Cline.

Those CDs transformed my life as a parent. From them, I got two or three concrete strategies that were simple, easy to remember and implement, and very effective. I was suddenly no longer held hostage by the threat of a tantrum, nor was I so emotionally drained by the tantrums she did have. What a miracle! Not only did the strategies presented work for my daughter’s behavior and my reaction to it, but listening to and implementing the Love and Logic® tools simply made me feel more confident, more loving, and just plain better about myself.

When I began planning the first Gala Goddess event, I immediately thought of Love and Logic® because of the difference it has made in my life. What a blessing it is to be a part of bringing that miracle to the lives of other parents, teachers and others who care for children.
